In recent years, moissanite has become very popular as a diamond alternative; moissanite resembles diamond but costs much less. Composed of silica and carbon (C), moissanite can be reproduced in the laboratory. Why reproduce? This stone was initially discovered in 1893 in the Canyon Diablo meteorite, which fell approximately 50,000 years ago in Arizona, USA, and was the origin of the Meteor Crater .
Moissanite has on average more brilliance than diamond thanks to its refractive index of 2.65 to 2.69, compared to 2.417 to 2.419 for diamond. This means that moissanite reflects more light than diamond, provided that two stones are similar in color, cut and size.
This brilliant stone has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale . It is second only to diamond in terms of hardness, meaning you can be certain your jewelry will last.
